Making the LSD Orientation Video

One of the first things we do during the summer is make our shop's orientation video. I take pride in making kick ass videos, so it becomes a big production for us. This year the video shop had the idea that each segment would segue right into the next shop's segment. Therefore the theatre staff needed to be present so they could shoot their video standing in the same places and in the same light as our video. Unfortunately, the night we shot the videos we had a big storm. So, just like we do when we have a storm during a tech rehearsal, we shut down and waited it out. Here are some shots from that night.

We're all set up and ready to go. Just waiting for the weather to cooperate.

Finally the storm passed. Here is Phoebe standing in the light from the LSD video.

And Mimi...

And some still shots of the lighting in the video

Videos

This year we decided to document the making of this video since there was so much interest in how we did last year's. Here is a series of bad attempts to document how we did it.

  • An introduction to the documentary

  • In this video you see me fail when I try to run one of the effects. (this would have made the blooper reel)

  • Part 2 (effects) Take 2 - another blooper - watch as the 3rd effect does something totally unexpected. Also listen for Amy laughing at me.

  • Part 2 (effects) Take 3 - This time they work. Listen for Amy continuing to laugh at me.

  • Part 3 - Fog

  • Part 4 - putting the effects together with the music - you'll hear me hitting the "GO" button on the light board to fire each effect. Eventually we synch it up with the sound track using MIDI so the music track electronically fires the "GO" button. You'll also notice we haven't written the whole thing yet.

  • Part 5 - synching it with MIDI - The lighting effects are now fired electronically by MIDI triggers we inserted into the music track. Watch for the blooper at the end where our next effect didn't run. You can hear our reaction when it fails.

  • A dry run after it's all put together

  • The final product that was in the orientation video
